In a comparative test with five wheeled excavators in the 16 t class produced by world famous manufacturers, the Volvo EW 160B emerged as the clear winner. "It's fun working with this machine" was the unanimous response from the operators. The high degree of user-friendliness is thanks to the machine's fast, sensitive and precise response to operator commands as a result of the Linde Synchron Control System LSC.
With the claim of further increasing productivity, versatility and comfort as well as conforming to the more stringent Tier 3/Stage IIIA emissions standard, Volvo will launch its C-Series wheeled excavators in the 14 t, 16 t and 18 t weight categories at Bauma 2007. As with the successful B-Series, the entire C-Series will be fitted with a hydrostatic working system made by Linde.
Linde Hydraulics provides the optimum system solution for all C-Series wheeled excavators: from the compact wheeled excavator, which operates powerfully and quietly on narrow roads and municipal building sites, to the 18 t-machine, which also has to work under extreme conditions on difficult terrain.
Besides the more powerful Volvo diesel engines that conform to the Tier 3/Stage IIIA standard and the new improved Care Cab, a key feature for the success of this new generation of wheeled excavators is the state-of-the-art hydraulic system, which plays a crucial role in making these excavators so user friendly and economical.
The driving force behind the operating hydraulics is the Linde Synchron Control (LSC) System. With the synchronized movement of all hydraulic actuators regardless of load, it guarantees outstanding precision control of the main functions, whatever the application.
Whether the wheeled excavator is used for digging, cutting tarmac, laying pipes or transporting construction materials, the LSC System and the operating hydraulics adapt perfectly to the job. Fast response times and optimum utilization of capacity are guaranteed by the demand-oriented build-up of pressure and volume flow. Furthermore, individual actuators, such as the boom and arm or the swing function can be prioritized. If necessary, the machine operator can further increase the performance with an integrated power boost, therefore taking advantage of the machine’s full potential.
In all of the C-Series wheeled excavators, an HPR-02 regulating pump, which reduces pulsation throughout the entire operating range, helps to achieve a low noise level both inside the cab and outside the vehicle. In the EW 180C, an HPR 210-02 LSE delivers up to 399 l of oil per minute, supplying a VW25 M3/6 monoblock.
This monoblock provides for the load-independent flow distribution to the individual consumers: boom (boom mounted valves), arm, bucket, boom adjust, outriggers/blade, hammer, drive motor and swing drive.
The integration of various valve functions in the monoblock leads to a compact design and eliminates the expense of installing hoses and tubes. Thus the equipment manufacturer benefits from shorter assembly times and subsequent maintenance work is also made considerably easier.
The monoblock with all integrated additional functions is now installed according to the plug-and-play principle. This also improves the overall efficiency of the hydraulic system, since power loss associated with the hoses and tubes is eliminated. The result: improved response, precision and efficiency.
The powerful monoblock VW25 M3/6 features the following functions:
>> Regeneration for the boom and the arm.
The oil return from the cylinders is controlled by a valve integrated into the monoblock. This results in significant energy savings, as the oil required on the opposite side of the cylinder now no longer has to travel through the tank and the pumps, but is fed in directly.
>> Controllable pre-load valves for cooler and tank.
Two integrated valves provide the option of pre-loading the hydraulic system as well as a thermostatic function. This ensures the effective warming-up of the hydraulic fluid by means of thermostat-controlled activation of the cooler circuit.
>> Integrated throttles
for precise lowering and retraction of boom, arm and bucket.
>> Integrated load hold valves
for precise holding of the boom position also in standby mode.
>> Integrated power boost.
The machine operator can increase the digging performance by 10 % if needed. This takes advantage of the maximum power potential of the EW 180C.
Another system component is the GS 2500 swing drive. With its powerful torque, it ensures rapid work cycles when positioning loads or when working on a slope. The anti-reaction valve which is positioned directly at the motor housing ensures precise stopping of the revolving upper structure, without backlash. Secondary relief valves with a time ramp provide for fast and smooth stopping of the upper structure. The rapid response of the upper carriage and the associated handling performance have a direct effect on the operator’s comfort and on the performance of the excavator and its operator. This is why particular emphasis was placed on the swing function when developing the C-Series.
Boom mounted valves complete the hydraulic system of the EW180C. These valves control the two boom cylinders and also function as pipe breakage protectors and load stabilizers. They are mounted directly on the boom cylinders. This saves installation space in the machine and increases the response characteristics of the boom.
This improved LSC system from Linde Hydraulics is the basis for the user-friendliness, economic efficiency and environmental friendliness of the new C-Series from Volvo. Sensitive machine operation and optimum utilization of capacity save time and fuel and make the C-Series wheeled excavators trendsetters for the industry.
